White Pines (wpd)
White Pines is a 29-turbine project proposed by wpd Canada, a subsidiary of wpd GMBH, a German wind energy developer with more than 200 project in operation worldwide.
It is proposed for private land along the south shore of Prince Edward County in South Marysburgh and eastern Athol, spanning about 15 km across a major migration flyway and staging area. Of the 29 turbines, 12 will be within the South Shore Important Bird Area, and another 8 will be just outside the border.
This project’s wind turbines will be located within 2 km of hundreds of home in South Marysburgh and eastern Athol. It is expected to result in adverse human health effects in a significant percentage of residents, and reductions in property values as well.
The application for this project has been deemed complete by the Ministry of the Environment, despite major deficiencies and omissions identified by citizens’ groups. It is undergoing technical review, with approval expected by the end of 2014, followed by appeal to an Environmental Review Tribunal which will take another six months.
CCSAGE has recruited almost 400 County property owners and business owners to sue the developer for losses in property values and business profits if the project is built.
